From specialized computing to shared infrastructure.
Historically, high-performance computing at New Mexico State University developed through distributed departmental labs, domain-specific centers (such as bioinformatics), and statewide collaborations with institutions like the New Mexico Consortium, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratories.
To unify these computational needs, NMSU's Information Technologies (IT) established Discovery, the university's centralized HPC cluster.
In recent years, as the Discovery cluster is retired, NMSU's research computing mandate has expanded beyond campus borders to serve as a regional supercomputing hub.
Supported by federal grants—such as National Science Foundation (NSF) Campus Cyberinfrastructure (CC*) awards— NMSU's HPC team has integrated remote access frameworks to democratize high-performance computing for under-resourced and rural institutions across New Mexico.
The next generation of high-performance computing at NMSU.
In Fall 2026, NMSU introduces the Colibrí cluster. This cluster will support data science, artificial intelligence, and interdisciplinary research at NMSU and across the state.
Colibrí will be freely available to students, faculty, and staff to fulfill computational needs that enrich opportunities for research and knowledge for the state of New Mexico.
